“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived, it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”  – Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. Mandela Day calls on us all, to make the world a better place. Each year on the 18th of July we look back on what has been done, and forward to what will be done.

It is with great pleasure to say that as 17 Maintenance Unit we gave back to the community by celebrating the day with our elderly of KHAYALETHU OLD AGE HOME. The day was well coordinated at Mohading Community Hall where all members of Khayalethu Old Age Home were gathered to be entertained by the  the amazing choir of 17 M/U followed by a poem that summed up the significance of Mandela Day. The day ended with a drill session by our dedicated Military Skills Development System, and of course we couldn’t have made this day possible without the support of AVBOB, North West Mental Health, Blue Ribbon, Social Development. Our chefs prepared a mouth-watering soup for all members, while Blue Ribbon complimented the soup with 100 loafs which was more than enough for everyone. Social responsibility is of most importance as it is a reminder of how an organization should pledge itself towards contributing to the welfare and interests of the society in which it operates.

Mrs L.J Bontsi, the founder of Khayalethu Old Age Home, was humbled by the support she received from the Unit as well as those that made the day possible. Her vision does not go unnoticed as she made it her responsibility to take care of our senior citizens, with the little that she has. We 17 m/u supports her on this remarkable journey she endeavours, by donating groceries, cleaning material, toiletries on a yearly basis.

Our helping hand does not end there, together with the social workers we plan on embarking on a joined venture to make everyday a Mandela Day.

We believe that it is in our hands to make the world a better place and what better way to do that other than to help one another just as the great Nelson Mandela envisioned it.

EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS THE POWER TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD, THE ABILITY TO MAKE AN IMPACT.
