On the 11th August 2017, the Chief of the SA Army Lieutenant General Lindile Yam again honoured the devoted comrades of the Defence Force. The Mandela Medal Parade was hosted at the SA Army Headquarters parade ground in Pretoria.

The awarding of the medals and decorations for loyalty and outstanding performance rendered by the serving members has been part of the entrenched military tradition that has been practiced by military institutions worldwide.

To commence the inauguration, the SA Army Signal Formation parade magnificently marched on led by Parade Commander Major G. Gaobakwe and Parade Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Class 2 P. Chauke. The trooping of the Army Band Limpopo under the Baton of Warrant Officer M. Morukhuladi and Drum Major Staff Sergeant M. Dombo entertained the seated crowd at the Headquarters’ parade ground.

Lieutenant General Yam and his entourage arrived after the pre-announcements with the band being in position. Captain M.E. Mashiane read the South African National Defence Force’s Code of Conduct for all uniformed members that were present. Chaplain M. Van Rooyen conducted scripture reading and prayer, which was followed by the inspection of the parade by Lieutenant General Yam before the recipients of the medals marched on.

Among other medals received on the day was the Mandela Medal for the patriots who ensured the smooth burial of our icon, the late President Nelson Mandela. The Good Service Medal awarded to loyal and hard working members who served in the army. The Tshumelo Ikatelaho Medal for members who took part in the Peace Support and Humanitarian Aid across Africa. The following medals and decorations were presented:

  • Mandela Silver Medal: Lieutenant Colonel Phale Moroamodishi.
  • Mandela Bronze Medal: Major Nomzamo Mkhize and Corporal Yandisa Mqolombeni
  • Tshumelo Ikatelaho With Peace Support Clasp: Major General Eric Mnisi, Captain Godfrey Makola, Warrant Officer Class 1 Nthateng Mathibela, Sergeant Rebecca Tlou and Corporal Rendani Luvhengo.
  • Tshumelo Ikatelaho: Major Travor Plaatjies, Warrant Officer Class 1 Kebogile Kgobe.
  • Medalje Vir Troue Diens Met 20 Jaar Gespe: Lieutenant Kerekang Letswalo, Staff Sergeant Andries Nemaulama and Sergeant Dumisani Singwane.
  • Bar To The Medalje Vir Troue Diens (20 Years): Lieutenant Colonel Bonita Ntshekisang, Lieutenant Corporal Ndishavhelakhi Mukhundwani.
  • Good Service Medal APLA Bronze (10 Years):  Corporal Ndlelehle Kabini
  • Medalje Vir Troue Diens (10 Years): Captain Klaas Lekokoana, Captain Godfrey Makola, Lieutenant Alvinia Orayn, Staff Sergeant Nolene Appasamy, Sergeant Ngwako Machaba, Sergeant Michelle Louise.
  • Sadic Peace Support OPS Medal: Major General Eric Mnisi.

In his address, the Chief of the SA Army mentioned that he was honoured to reward the decorations and medals, thanked all who attended and those who prepared the parade.

Lt Gen Yam reminded the recipients of the laurels about the uniqueness of these specific medals - “You are carrying a great icon’s face on your chest; therefore you need to strive for his selfless conduct and become good soldiers for your people”, said the Chief of the Army.

The Chief of the Army concluded by also showing gratitude to friends, families and loved ones of the recipients for being there in support of the members’ military careers, “you are the silent heroes and heroines of the South African National Defense Force”.
