National Defence Force Participation in the
National Civic Remembrance Day Service and
Parade, Freedom of Entry, Johannesburg City, 9
November 2008
The City of Johannesburg granted the freedom
of entry to 21 South African Infantry Battalion
(21 SAI Bn) and several Reserve units. Once a
year, these units exercise their right to the
freedom of the city by marching through the
city.
The event took place on Saturday, 8 November
2008 at the Orlando East Community Centre in
Mooki Street, Orlando East. The main
functionaries were the Madam Speaker of the
Johannesburg City Council, Councillor Nkele
Ntingane, while Major General Themba Nkabinde,
the General Officer Commanding of the SA Army
Infantry Formation represented the SA Army.
This colourful military ceremony included a
march past with colour parties of the unit and
regiments which have been accorded the status of
the Freedom of the City of Johannesburg.
The Madam Speaker inspected and addressed the
parade. The marching columns exercised their
right to the freedom of the city by marching
through Orlando East.
