The SA Army honoured its members during the medal parade, which was held at SA Army Headquarters Parade Ground on 3 September 2008.

At the parade eighty-two medals were handed over by Chief of the Army Lieutenant General S.Z.Shoke. Among the medals handed over, was a 40-year medal, which was given to Colonel van Heerden for serving South Africa and its people with utmost dedication and loyalty.

Other medals handed over were the Unitas medal, Good Services Medals for ten, twenty, and thirty years and the Tshumelo Ikatelaho medal (Operational medal for Southern Africa) to mention the few.

Lieutenant General S.Z. Shoke in his speech said, “always remember that success is a journey, not a destination”. He thanked the National Ceremonial Guard for providing an outstanding parade.

He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to spouses families and friends of the recipients for their support to our soldiers whenever duty called. Without you, these achievements and milestone would not be possible, concluded Lieutenant General S.Z. Shoke.
