General S.Z. Shoke |
The Chief of the South African Army,
Lieutenant General Solly Shoke is
currently visiting South African Army
units. On 9 June 2010, he visited 4
South African Infantry Battalion and
Army Support Base Mpumalanga.
The main aim of these visits is to
brief the soldiers on developments in
the South African National Defence Force
and to listen to soldiers’ problems and
concerns.

Spectators screamed
and shouted “Ingane Zethu”, which means
“our children”, when Lieutenant Colonel
Zweni, the Acting Officer Commanding of
3 South African Infantry Battalion, led
his recruits onto the parade ground.
They went wild when the Kroonstad Band
marched onto the parade. This happened
on 13 May 2010 at 3 South African
Infantry Battalion during Military
Skills Development System (MSDS)
Passing-Out Parade, at which 937
recruits graduated. The main functionary
was Lieutenant General Solly Shoke, the
Chief of the Army.

The spirit of the
members of the South African Army Combat
Training Centre was high while they were
waiting for the Chief of the Army,
Lieutenant General S.Z.Shoke, address
them at the SA Army Combat Training
Centre on 11 May 2010. One of the troops
said that it would be the first time
that he saw the Chief of the Army.

The South African Army
held the Warrant Officer of the South
African Army Dedication Service on
Friday, 7 May 2010 at the Thaba Tshwane
Town Hall.
The service was
attended by the Warrant Officer of the
South African Army, Senior Chief Warrant
Officer V. Kgaladi, Warrant Officer 2
J.A.J. van Eck, the Assistant Defence
Attaché from the Netherlands and warrant
officers from the different Services.

2010, the South African Gunners from the
South African Artillery and the South
African Air Defence Artillery once again
came together to remember their fallen
comrades who had paid the ultimate price
in various different operations and

The South African Army
is offering young South African citizens
between the ages of 18 and 22 (the
maximum entry requirement for graduates
is 26 years) an opportunity to serve in
uniform over a two year period through
the Military Skills Development System.
During the January
2010 South African Army intake, 2 804
newly selected Military Skills
Development System members reported for
Basic Military Training at the various
South African Army training centres of
excellence. 860 Members reported at 3
South African Army Infantry Battalion.

The South African Army
is committed to serve this country and
all the people who live in it. Although
its primary task is landward defence, it
has a responsibility to both external
and internal communities. Kiddy College
forms part of the South African Army’s
internal communities.
The South African Army subscribes to the
statement by Malcolm X that, “Education
is the passport to the future, for
tomorrow belongs to those who prepare
for it today” and reaches out and
invests in our children.

Ferrer, the Chief of the Chilean Army,
and his delegation paid a goodwill visit
to Lieutenant General Solly Shoke over
the period 14 to 20 February 2010. The
visit was aimed at enhancing existing
relations with the Chilean Army.

Programme 2:
Landward Defence with the purpose
of providing, preparation and support
landward defence capabilities for the
defence and protection of South Africa.
Measurable Objectives
Defend and protect South Africa and
its territory by:
►providing three infantry battalions a
year for external deployment, three
companies for internal deployment, one
air landed battalion, two multi-role
battalions in reserve, and four
battalions involved in exercises;
►exercising one tank regiment and one
armoured car regiment a year;
► preparing one composite artillery
regiment and one light artillery
battery, and having one light artillery
battery in reserve a year.
► exercising one air defence artillery
regiment and one light air
defence artillery battery in reserve a
year; and
► providing three engineer squadrons for
external deployment, one
composite engineer squadron for internal
deployment, and
exercising one light (parachute)
engineer squadron a year.
